As with a low sucking sound it slowly disappeared again, Starbuck still gazing at the agitated waters where it had sunk, with a wild voice exclaimed—“Almost rather I had seen Moby Dick and fought him, than to have seen thee, thou white ghost!”
“What was it, Sir?” said Flask.
“The great live squid, which, they say, few whale-ships ever beheld and returned to their ports to tell of it.”

Moby-Dick, 1851

NEWS

3-17-09  No one reads this column
Guys, FURL sucks. It has sucked for years, and I'm sorry I've been using it. I have switched over to delicious; I would have done this much sooner, but they made it really difficult the last time I tried.

4-21-08  Archives
Uhmm, apparently archives haven't really been working since late 2006. THANX for the heads up guys! They are temporarily fixed, and will stay temporarily fixed until I migrate to new software/layout. I have said some hilarious things in the last 7 years, that future generations will feel lucky I preserved. Go check them out.

1-18-08  new iPhone icon
Woah, it's been 3 years since the last news update! Fuzzysquid now has a webclips icon for your iPhone! It'll automagically show up when you add FS to your home screen. Atom and RSS feeds have been available for a few years now, but I never made special mention of it.

1-14-05  LJ images
Since it seems to be popular, and it's been linked in a lot of different places besides here, I've decided to post the LJ Images page. At least in the news, at least for now. It's also getting some Google ads because you LiveJournal people are sucking up all my bandwidth (35% for that one page!)

4-02-04  FURL
Check out what I've been browsing: FURL.net bookmark archive. Not much commentary, relevance, or sequitur—but it's what's keeping this blog from turning into a meme dumpster.

my friend eizan was in rare form tonight. some quotes: "so if you're nice you better learn how to find ways of circumventing the law when you want to kick a jerk's ass." on the discovery channel: "but my understanding is more like the understanding of religion, not like my understanding of say, predicate logic or quantum physics or anything like that. I've accepted alot of it without really understanding why it's there." and finally, "god. fucking mathematics always kicks your ass in the end."

it's fun to undress other people. i do it the same way i unwrap presents--careful reverse engineering. my last 'other' liked to tear open her gifts, with bits of wrapping flying to the corners of the room...

Limbo period: the time between being naked and then being naked with someone else. But, isn't it funny how undressing is the hardest yet also sometimes the best part of it all?

i know that crossing your arms across your chest is a (supposedly) defensive posture to take, but does anyone else find it as comfortable as i do? it's also basically the only thing left to do when you're naked. i suppose you could hold your hands behind your back, or cover your goods with them, but neither seem very appropriate for those intimate situations. and putting your hands on your hips seems too eager... isn't the hardest part of intimacy getting undressed? because after that, well, you've got to do something with your hands...

i was reminded this weekend of another (of the many) reasons why i miss cmu: yoshi kunimoto. he's a graduate student in design, and a rock star. literally. he was huge in japan, had legions of screaming teenage fans, was responsible for nintendo music (yoshi the dragon was named after him), and in 1998 the IAU named an asteroid in his honor (KUNIMOTO).

i've been staying with jen this weekend, and it has been a real eye-opener. sweet merciful crap, her place is filthy. she's a complete mess. i'm utterly amazed that she's still alive, given the squalor she lives in. i had to do the dishes tonight just to make myself feel better. i do feel a little bad, because after i first expressed my horror at her bathroom, she did clean up a bit. and she made me a sandwich this afternoon, that was very nice.

andy, sam and magnani and i went to the mini dealership yesterday afternoon. ok. what the crap. the dealerships in manhattan and new jersey wouldn't even let you take a look without an appointment. the four of us went in looked around for 15 minutes before the guy came over to say hello. can we test drive the S? he handed us the keys. we were dumbfounded. he didn't ask for anyone's license, or a deposit. we slowly started moving towards the door, and we realized he had no intention of coming with us...! it was like being set loose in a candy store. my god, i don't think i've had this much fun in the last 6 months. i should say however, that given the opportunity to play with someone else's toy, you do things... you wouldn't ever do on your own car. if you wanted it to last more than 10K miles, that is. we took it out around schenley, on the winding roads. there was one turn joe took really hard at 45 mph that made us all scream like little girls. imagine 4 grown men racing around in a sky blue clown car with stupid grins. we couldn't figure out if people were smiling in the "groovy man" or the "those guys are buffoons" way. we took 45 mins. and added 20 miles to the car. we had to take it around the block (slowly) a few times before returning it, to get rid of the burnt rubber smell. if you're thinking about picking one up, i heartily recommend the Cooper S. it's not the fastest ride, but the handling is choice. the most fun car in it's price class, for sure.

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters;
that's our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time's
horrible burden one which breaks your shoulders and bows
you down, you must get drunk without cease.
But with what?
With wine, poetry, or virtue
as you choose.
But get drunk.
And if, at some time, on steps of a palace,
in the green grass of a ditch,
in the bleak solitude of your room,
you are waking and the drunkeness has already abated,
ask the wind, the wave, the stars, the clock,
all that which flees,
all that which groans,
all that which rolls,
all that which sings,
all that which speaks,
ask them, what time it is;
and the wind, the wave, the stars, the birds, and the clock,
they will all reply:
"It is time toget drunk!
So that you may not be the martyred slaves of Time,
get drunk, get drunk,
and never pause for rest!
With wine, poetry, or vitrtue,
as you choose!"

oh wait, now I'm confused. I just read a good review from the times. i'd normally not even consider a broadway.com "review," but lately the times has been pretty awful...

There's talk of severe drought here in the tri-state area. If I remember my Earth Science correctly, the amount of water on the planet Earth has remained essentially unchanged since the beginning of time. So that must mean that if it's dry here, it's precipitating somewhere else. I wonder what's keeping the rain clouds away. April showers indeed... it's still early, though, so let's hope it rains. In the meantime, remember: save water! shower with a friend!

how many people have seen you naked? i am unable to answer that question accurately. my junior year i made a book of photography, a series of nude portraitures of some friends. of course, to prove i wouldn't ask anything of my models that i wouldn't do myself, i shot nude self-portraits that were to be included in the book. ultimately, i chickened out and put some rather tame ones of myself in the final. but after one particularly late session, i spaced out and left several large, full-monty prints in the dryer overnight... and in the computer cluster the next day i noticed several of the senior girls giving me odd looks... one of them later confirmed that there had been significant traffic in the darkroom since my last visit, but wouldn't give up names. the things we do for art.

i got through a third of this article that jennie, The Cousin, sent me several weeks ago. and that was only because there was a lot of traffic today. i can safely say i'll never be allowed into the club of SNOOTiery as i often use the "10 items or less" lane at the supermarket without any sense of chagrin. my snobbery is wholly typographical, and not lexigraphical (okay, maybe a little... i did almost just write the correct usage). the article claims the language goons as the "last remaining kind of truely elitist nerd" which i suspect jennie also disagrees with, as i know she is well on her way to obtaining her linux nerd certification...

i always wondered how google worked: "Page and Brin experimented with numerous avian motivators before settling on a combination of linseed and flax (lin/ax) that not only offered superior performance, but could be gathered at no cost from nearby open space preserves. This open space lin/ax powers Google's operations to this day, and a visit to the data coop reveals pigeons happily pecking away at lin/ax kernels and seeds."
